Supermicro Introduces Industry’s First Server & Storage Systems Supporting EDSFF – First Compact Open Industry Standard for All-Flash NVMe Optimized Storage

EDSFF’s Higher Density/Capacity and Improved Thermal Efficiency is Available to Customers in BigTwin™ 2U Four-node System and Multiple 1U Petascale Systems

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 25, 2019 — Super Micro Computer, Inc. (SMCI), a global leader in enterprise computing, storage, networking solutions, and green computing technology, today launched the industry’s first family of server and storage systems that support EDSFF (Enterprise and Datacenter Storage Form Factor) NVMe drives.

EDSFF is the first industry-standard all-flash NVMe specification optimized for storage; it propels NVMe to the next level with higher density, improved manageability, and optimal thermal efficiency. EDSFF builds on NVMe capabilities delivering six times more throughput and seven times latency reduction over traditional flash storage. It works with both long (E1.L) and short (E1.S) drives and many drive manufacturers support EDSFF, giving customers broader storage options with up to one or a half petabyte density in 1U.

The unique new BigTwin 2U four-node system offers the highest performance (IOPS/GB) with ten E1.S drives plus two SATA M.2 per node. The BigTwin’s industry-leading multi-node efficiency with shared power and cooling is enhanced with the thermal efficiency of EDSFF drives to deliver additional resource savings. With no compromise on features, each node also supports dual 2nd Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors up to 205-watts and 24 DIMMs.

1U Petascale Systems

Supermicro’s Petascale line of all-flash NVMe™ 1U storage servers supports next-generation flash technologies with up to 52GB/second data bandwidth, high IOPS performance, NVMe over Fabrics, and ease of maintenance.

The new EDSFF Petascale systems optimize capacity and efficiency ($/GB/Watt) and include the 1U Petascale E1.L with support for 32 high-capacity E1.L drives; the 1U Petascale E1.S, a 30” depth system with support for 32 high-capacity E1.S drives; and, the Petascale JBOF supporting 32 E1.L drives for storage expansion and connectivity up to eight hosts. All of these systems are available now.

Supermicro also offers a 1U Petascale system optimized for NF1 form factor NVMe drives that has been shipping in volume since Q4 2018. Like the EDSFF Petascale systems, the 1U Petascale NF1 supports 32 high-capacity drives.

More technical information needed?

As we have already said, there are multiple options for wiping devices and we cannot list them all here, but major factors you might have to consider will be how long it may take to wipe the drive and what level of security you desire as they are typically linked.  For example, if you have a large hard drive, to make a very simple overwrite of zeros will take much less time to complete than writing random data (more effective). And the more passes that are required (effectively increasing the level of protection), the longer it takes. Common standards range from as few as 1 passes up to 35 passes.

If the process used also verifies each write at the end of each pass, then the whole process will take longer than using a different wipe method that doesn’t verify at all or waits until the very end of the last pass to verify that the data has been overwritten.

Whichever method you use, they all have Pro’s and Con’s which we would be happy to discuss with you.

Here is a guide to a few of the most commonly recognised international standards for data wiping:

Canadian Standard

RCMP TSSIT OPS-II (Four-pass wipe)

This method uses four different passes. It alternates ones and zeros to write over data on the first three passes, it then writes random characters on the fourth and verifies that step was successful.

This method is similar to a US-based standard which is called NAVSO P-5239-26, defined by the US Navy.

US Department of Defence

DoD 5220.22-M (Three-pass wipe)

US Department of Defence standards are another military-grade option for data destruction. This works very similarly to the Canadian and US Naval standards. It uses zeros in the first pass and ones in the second pass, followed by a random character in the third. The main difference between the Canadian and Navy standard and this DOD is that each pass is verified along the way.


Gutmann, Pfitzner, and Schneier’s Methods

These different algorithms are complex multi-pass overwrites which prevent the extraction of the original data.

The Gutmann Method is one of the most complex and thorough wiping standards. This approach uses 18 to 35 different passes. It uses heavy variations in the overwriting patterns. Random characters are also input at certain intervals and a complex pattern is used throughout the entire overwrite. This method is a good option for older hard drives.

The Pfitzner Method is equally complicated. This method uses a 33-pass option and runs the entire program multiple times. Verification occurs along the way and also uses a combination of random characters for each pass. There is the option for both a seven-pass and 33-pass program.

The Schneier Method has a more complex system than some of the other standard data destruction techniques. It first employs zeros and ones in the first two passes followed by five more random characters. Some software will verify that a character was written, and will then start the process all over again if the verification shows a failure to write the character to the drive.

Global e-waste is due to hit 50 million tonnes this year. 80% of electronic waste ends up shipped to developing countries such as Ghana, China, India and Nigeria.  E-waste is now the fastest growing waste stream in the world and with that comes the need for effective recycling programs.

E-waste poses a great threat to the environment. Electronics contain toxic components such as lead, barium, mercury and lithium. If the heavy metals found in computer batteries are improperly disposed, they can penetrate through the soil and run to streams or ponds. This can result in the death of animals which may exist in these waters. If the contaminated ground water enters the ”soil-crop food pathway” it can persist in that environment for a long time. This increases the risk of exposure to people and livestock.

So, now that you are aware of the dangers of e-waste and the effects it has on the environment, it is time to do something about it. Just like reselling a mobile phone, you can also sell your used server equipment. To minimise any risk of data or identity theft, it is important that your used equipment ends up in the right hands.

By 2020, at least 85% will have to be recycled. It is important to recycle or resell your used equipment and fix and upgrade or buy refurbished in the future.
